１９７０年、ポール・スミスがショップを開く。ケンゾーやマーガレット・ハウエルを扱うセレクトョップとして出発。徐々に自分のデザインしたアイテムも扱い始める。
“ファイロファックス”、”ボクサー・ショーツ”や８ボタンのポロシャツ等を世に輩出。
９８年にはローバー社の”ミニ”の内外装をデザイン。
もともとセレクトショップから出発しており、何と言うか・・・・位置づけのしにくいブランドである。デザインとして、と言うよりはむしろコーディネートの点において優れている。故にジーンズ・ブランド、カジュアル・ライン、レディスライン、シューズに香水と、その展開は多岐に渡っている。オートクチュールメゾンと言うわけでもなく、かと言ってプレタポルテ・・・・と言うわけでもなく・・・・。しかしポールスミスというブランドがファッションの世界で一種の帝国を築いているのは間違いない。
